Etymology This species was named after Ira La Rivers, biologist at University of Nevada, Reno, who collected the type series. (Source: Johnson et al., 2022: 54.)
Primary type information Primary type material: holotype worker. Primary type locality: U.S.A.: Nevada, Washoe County, Mullen Gap (5 mi W Pyramid Lake), Pyramid Mining Distr., Nevada Dominion Mine, 8.vi.1951 (I. La Rivers). Primary type depository: USNM. Primary type specimen: USNMENT00529582.

Type notes The original description says that 15 paratypes were returned to Dr La Rivers, the current whereabouts of these is unknown.
