Etymology Bola-bola is the name that Malagasy people give to logs of rosewood, a plant of the genus Dalbergia (Schuurman 2009). Stigmatomma bolabola is named for the resemblance between its color and that of rosewood timber, and because it lives in the region of Madagascar most affected by illegal rosewood logging.
