Etymology Morphological, from obsolete French: Harlequin, a pantomime fool with brightly colored clothing. The specific epithet refers to the similarity in color pattern to the sympatric ant species Pheidole harlequina.

Type-locality: Dominican Republic: La Altagracia, Parque Nacional del Este, Caseta de Guaraguao, 18.32715 N 68.80733 W, 10 m, 30.iii.2004, evergreen coastal forest 5-10 m tall on coralline rock, relatively undisturbed native vegetation, nest fragment in dead, dry stick 2 cm in diameter on litter surface in shade; dense, shady tree clump to 6 m tall, #SPC DR-151 (S.P. Cover). Type-depository: MCZC. Type-specimen: CASENT0756091.
