Type notes:Wheeler, 1911g’s type-species designation is probably irrelevant as Imhoff, 1852: 175-177, gives no diagnosis of Sphegomyrmex, and mentions no named species in the genus. He merely states (p. 176), “...eine Ameise vor uns haben, welche etwas von den Merkmalen der Raubwespe in sich aufnimmt, habe ich ihm den Gattungsnamen Sphegomyrmex geben zu dürfen geglaubt.” Sphegomyrmex therefore appears to be a nomen nudum.
[Sphecomyrmex: unjustified emendation of spelling by Schulz, 1906: 154.]
[Note: Sphecomyrmex was treated as a junior synonym of Anomma by Bolton, 1995b: 46, Bolton, 2003: 149, and as a junior synonym of Dorylus by Borowiec, 2016: 112, but is perhaps best regarded as an unjustified emendation of spelling.]
