Odontomachus rixosus Smith, 1857 valid
Odontomachus rixosus Smith, 1857a: 64 (w.) SINGAPORE. Indomalaya.
Primary type information: Primary type material: 2 syntype workers. Primary type locality: Singapore, “SING”, and “SING. 55/9” (A.R. Wallace). Primary type depositories: BMNH, OXUM. Type notes: 1) The specimen at OXUM labelled as “type” by Donisthorpe, 1932c: 447, may not be so. One cannot be positive as there is no datum number on the disc of this specimen, which merely states “SING” (= Singapore). However, a specimen in BMNH, labelled “SING. 55/9” has the following information in the BMNH accessions register: “1859 no. 9. Singapore (Malacca), purchased of Stevens. Collected by Mr A.R. Wallace”. 2) B. Bolton suspects that this BMNH specimen may be the true holotype but he has no way of conclusively proving it. The only evidence in support of this view is that in the original description of Odontomachus rixosus, Smith, 1857a states that the “thorax” is “transversely striated.” The BMNH specimen more or less fits this description, whereas the OXUM specimen has weakly whorled, not transverse, striation on the pronotum (Bolton (unpublished notes) 1978).
