Primary type information: Primary type material: lectotype queen (by designation of Brown, 1962c: 238). Primary type locality: Brazil: St Paul (= São Paulo de Olivença) (H.W. Bates). Primary type depository: BMNH (lectotype). Primary type specimen: CASENT0900424. Type notes: 1) Type material is the queen alone; the workers originally included by Smith, 1860c are not conspecific and were excluded from the type series by Mayr, 1887: 575. 2) Brown, 1953d: 55 (in text), says the holotypes of Strumigenys mandibularis Smith, 1860c and Strumigenys batesi may be “part of the same collection and possibly of the same nest series”. 3) Brown, 1962c: 239, says some of Smith’s original specimens are in ZSBS.
